Over the 11 years that I've lived in Orange County, the Elvis Festival has become one of my ultimate favorite things to look forward to in the summer. Every August, right around my birthday (I'm convinced this is my present from the Universe) the OC Fairgrounds turns into a sideburn wearing, bedazzled pant rocking, upper lip curling wonderland of talent and creepiness.
It's absolutely fascinating.
The tradition goes, my mom and I grab a couple of giant Bud Lights, along with our cameras, and we go on the hunt. We find as many Elvis' (Elvii?) as we can, snap their photos, and then ride back to the house flipping through the pictures, laughing so hard we almost pee, and try to give them all names. These are some of my favorites throughout the years:
Cleavage Elvis
Crowd Working, Asian Elvis
Drug Dealer Elvis
"Can I Have A Carne Asada, Please" Elvis
Junk in the Trunk Elvis
Chick Elvis
Dancing Old Guy From The 6 Flags Commercials Elvis
Fanny Pack Elvis
A Rare Flock Of White Elvii
Ponytail Incognito Elvis
A Couple Of "These Other Guys Are So Lame" Elvii
A Pair of Twin Elvii
"Please Don't Fall Backwards, Mam" Elvis
Puerto Rican and Giant Elvis
Sloppy Elvis
I Think I Am So Cool Elvis
Tall And Small Elvis (AKA Alice In Wonderland Elvii)
Wayne Newton Elvis
The Motherload
This year's Elvis Fest is on August 26th and you bet your sweaty ass I'll be back out here to visit that week. Four stages of Elvis tribute artists and impersonators, Elvis and Priscilla stilt walkers, Elvis Karaoke Contest (Creme de la King), Open Mic Elvis, Cadillac Kings Car Club, Official Elvis Presley Fan Clubs -Jailhouse Rockers of California and All Shook Up, and the official launch of this years collectors Mr. Potato Head Elvis (of which I have the first 2 years in mint condition) What better way to commemorate The King's August 16, 1977 death? There just simply is no better way.
